Last week, it was the Onion doing a write-up. This week, the monthly edition of Rick's Cafe came out with a great article written by our very own KeaLynn Kees came out, complete with some really pretty pictures of three of our comics!
Also, dane101.com has another article up about the Project on its excellent website: http://www.dane101.com/arts/2005/06/13/a_closer_look_at_wisuc_comic_mark_kump
What a wonderful article! Whoever wrote it's a fucking genius. Perhaps if you sleep with the genius, she'll write some nice stuff about you, too.

| A short biography |
[04 May 2005|10:50pm] |
|
Starting as a completely ego-centric venture, The WiSUC Project began
as an idea to get more stage time. However, after not a
minute more of thought about it, soon came a realization that there was a very
large group of talented, local stand-up comics who could benefit
through having an alliance of some sorts. With limited venues in the
Dane County area, the concept was: if we can't find another place for
the audience to come to see us perform, then we will bring our
performances out to the city, to where people are, the untapped
audiences wandering about Madison's taverns. Music venues were the
first choice, and the High Noon Saloon was at the top of our list.
After sending a proposal for the Premier Showcase Night to Cathy
Dethmers, she gave us the thumbs-up, and essentially lended us a start
as a rejuvenating force in Madison's diminishing comedy scene.
The Wisconsin Stand Up Comedy Project began far before it was
officially founded in March 2005. The "at will" relationship between
the Project and its performers commits a lineup of comics for the
performances of their choice. The Project has not booked a stationary
venue at this point. So, what results is a rotating list of showcasers
on any given week, allowing any/every performer, no matter the level
of experience, an opportunity to get extra stage time. Any person
interested in doing stand-up is encouraged to contact me to become
involved. Different combinations of this first round's ten showcasers
have been performing together all over Wisconsin, Illinois, and
Michigan for over the past five years. Madison's Comedy Club on State
is the venue that has brought them all together. More information
about May 17th's performers:
Dan Krieg- has performed stand-up for the past 7 years. Got his start as a UW-Whitewater student and travelled as far as Chicago and St.
Louis just for open-mics. Now, Dan has hosted many shows at the Comedy
Club on State, at the UW-Whitewater campus, and some clubs in
Michigan. Can be seen in local commericials--recently has done some
work in that area for Charter and the American Red Cross. Was part of
the ARC Improv revival
Mark Kump- started as a comic doing open-mics locally about 6 years
ago. Taught by the 2nd City in Chicago. Has hosted and showcased
numerous times for the Comedy Club on State. Feature performances
include the soldout Narcotics Anonymous Conference in Milwaukee. Has
done commercial work for the American Red Cross as well. Was part of
the ARC Improv revival.
Chris Woldt- also started through open-mics, can be found as a feature link through Genna's infamous Monday night open-mic, has performed
with 2nd City in Chicago, also has done commercial work for American
Red Cross, initiated the great ARC improv revival and was one of its
top performers, collaborates with Mark and Dan on comedy writing for
shows and acts.
Kendra Frank- started stand-up career 3 years ago, first at open-mics
around Madison, and then moved up to showcasing once a month at the
Comedy Club on State last May, worked for UW-Madison's student radio
station, founder of the WiSUC project
Ben Kissel- a featuring comedian from Milwaukee Wisconsin. With a sharp tongue he offers social as well as Political commentary where nothing is out of bounds. He has featured for such comedians as; Megan Mooney, Buzz Sutherland, Reno Collier and Jon Reep (the Hemi Guy). Ben is a national touring comedian who has played countless clubs and bars. Ben Kissel came from a family made for comedy. With conservative parents and two homosexual older brothers Ben has a lot to joke about. His attack on the mainstream is sure to stir up emotion and most of all lots and lots of laughter.

Brett Voss- What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
Especially when a racket ball hits you in the family
jewels so hard it feels like the ornaments are going
to fall off the Christmas tree. (Metaphorically
speaking) That sums up Brett's life. To encompass
him in words... is impossible. His insatiable passion
for life contains thick sarcasm and complex simplicity
that will captivate you. His life bleeds comedy.
Some favorites include his inner child, playing bingo
with Mom, and his big brother. Having a big brother
50 years older than he was made his life hell... don't
ask! When you almost die, it changes your outlook on
life. At times, adversity validates good fortune.
Trust me, anything can be funny. Are you intrigued
yet? Come laugh with him!
Jen McCoy- UW-Madison Journalism student, has performed stand-up for the past two years as a showcaser at the Comedy Club on State, the
Liquid Lyrics Lounge, and tried her hand at Memorial Union's open-mic
with her act.
Nick Mortensen- began his comedy career by working as a doorman at his local comedy club. A perk of his job was to show the touring comics the sights of his hometown during the comics’ often shiftless daytimes. After hanging around Nick for a few days, many of the touring comics saw his natural flair for storytelling and a unique perspective in Nick and cajoled him into
taking the stage himself. After some reticence, Nick finally did take the
stage in 2003 at an amateur comedian’s show that had a prize of 100 dollars.
He won. Since then he has performed at many clubs and colleges in the
Midwest, co-written a play, and is developing a situation comedy based on
life in his hometown of Green Bay, WI. Nick still lives in Green Bay, WI
where he has been recognized as the “Top talent to watch for 2005”.
KeaLynn Kees- has been doing stand-up for 2 years, UW-Madison alumnus, has showcased at the Comedy Club many times and has much experience
doing open-mics in the Madison area.
Kitt Burroughs- hosts a popular radio show at UW-Stevens Point, will be emceeing the WiSUC Project on May 17th.
What we would like to see ultimately is a Comedy Hour at the High Noon, evolving into the Second City of Wisconsin. Other area comedy troupes are looking to be involved as well. The Wisconsin Union Directorate will be slotted time in this coming fall semester for joint shows with the UW's new
improv group, Wisconsin Improv Theatre.
There are so many opportunities for the WiSUC Project to rise its
great potential. We would really like to see the word get out about the
Project as much as possible so that more people participate and
perform, which is the ultimate goal behind our mission statement.

Holy man. Did you hear that TWO of WiSUC's performers will be at the Comedy Club on State?
THURSDAY, APRIL 28TH AT 8:30P!
I got really, really excited when I heard this. I got so excited that I got 4/28/05 tattooed on my back. I think my friends are going to be impressed.
Look for the 2-for-one coupon in The Onion.
The showcase WiSUC performers are Chris Woldt and Kendra Frank, in case you wanted to know.

| Doing It |
[20 Apr 2005|12:12pm] |
Due to audience request, The WiSUC Project finally has its own Livejournal account. And by "audience request," I mean per the suggestion of the WUD Student Performance Committee.
I'll start by offering this:
DO YOU LIKE TO PERFORM STAND-UP COMEDY? OR DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH IT AND LOVE IT AND CUDDLE WITH IT IN YOUR BED?
Then, here. Right here. No--a little to the left. Ahh. Perfect. The Wisconsin Stand Up Comedy Project is looking for ONE MORE PERFORMER for their Premiere Comedy Showcase Night at the High Noon Saloon on May 17th.
What? You haven't caught wind of this great opportunity, both for performers and supporters alike? Here, I'll let real commentary from REAL people do the work:
"I love the WiSUC Project. Like, I'm in flipping love with it. We're getting married next June. I know, I know--it's a bit soon in our relationship; the Project hasn't even had a chance to showcase yet. But that doesn't matter. To me, at least. Listen, as Tupac said, 'Only God can judge me.'" -Stephanie Matheson, student at U of M-St. Paul
I know that only one comment from one person, but we here at WiSUC feel it says so much. Like, very, very much.
TTFN! Sorry so sloppy, The WiSUC Project
