Hullo, oh wonderful hive mind. :) I've been trying on my own for *eyes calendar* too darn long, and I still can't find an apartment of the sort I'm after. As I'm now in 'Ack, to renew a lease or not!' mode, I turn to you. I probably should've done this weeks ago, hm? :) anyhow.
does anyone know of a place, either downtown or very near east side, that's got one-bedroom apartments for rent and is cat friendly? Nothing fancy - 600 or so a month is really all I can afford - but no crummy student housing, please! Just a proper apartment, *not* a room in a house, with one bedroom (I'm right tired of having my bedroom in the middle of my living room a la efficiency) and cats allowed. The kitty cat thing's a must.
Yes, I know I sound a little desperate. You'd be amazed how difficult it is to find the sort of place I'm after around here. If it helps at all/means anything, I'll likely be looking to move in some time in August.
Thanks, folks!

| Antique Cabinet TV For Free |
[17 Jul 2009|08:44pm] |
I've got an old cabinet TV, I think from the 60s or maybe earlier, that I need to get rid of. It doesn't work and the back panel has fallen off, but there's lots of vintage parts inside that may or may not be worth something to you if you're into that thing. It might be fixable, I dunno, I haven't played much with electronics since I ionized my braces and cauterized a taste bud when I was 13. Or you could gut it and turn it into a lovely aquarium (my original plan that I never got around to). Or it could just be a shelf to set stuff on. I just don't have room for it.
You just need to be able to help carry it down a flight of stairs and then take it away. Preferably tomorrow, or anytime after 5 next week. First to speak for it in that time frame can have it.

Do y'all know of a local metal shop that could help me with a small project? I need a cookie sheet cut down a bit and the edges buffed.

| National Ice Cream Day! |
[17 Jul 2009|01:26pm] |
This Sunday, July 19th, is National Ice Cream Day!
What does that mean for you, you may ask?
Well.
Cool things will happen if you go to any of Coldstone Creamery's 3 Madison-area locations (Madison: 427 State Street, Fitchburg: 2970 Cahill Main, Middleton: 1650 Deming Way-Greenway Station, I think).
Employees will be in funky clothes, there will be face painting and coloring pages for the kiddies, and if you buy a Love It or Gotta Have It sized signature creation, you get a free kids' scoop of ice cream! (Note: This means only a scoop, mix-ins and cones are extra)
The Madison and Middleton locations are open on Sunday from 12pm-10pm, and the Fitchburg location is open from 12pm-9:30pm.
And for those of you going to Maxwell Street Days sometime this weekend, the Madison location is open today and tomorrow from 12pm-11pm.
Hope you stop by! Tell your friends! :)

| Drum lessons? |
[17 Jul 2009|10:50am] |
Hi, folks! I'm interested in taking beginner drum lessons this fall. While I could take them through the U, I'd like to know about other options. I've heard about Madison Music Foundry, but unfortunately, that's too far away; driving is not an option, but anywhere easily accessible by bus would work. Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks for the help!

Hello!
I currently acquired a bike in pretty good shape, it hasn't been used in years. I'm looking to take it in for a tuneup (just basic stuff) and possibly for some new tubes for the tires. It was bought from Budget Bicycle Center, but I hear that they are pretty pricey as far as service work goes.
I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with any of the bike shops in town - there are a lot of them, and I'm just looking for a place that will help me out with some quick issues and not charge me exorbitant amounts of money for it. Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!

| Wisconsin Mutual Insurance is screwing me over |
[16 Jul 2009|07:33am] |
Hi all,
Just a warning about Wisconsin Mutual Insurance from an experience that I'm currently having with them.
Last month I was stopped at a stop sign and a guy rear ended me. When we first looked at the car, it didn't seem much damaged, but when I inspected more closely I realize there was damage and took it in to have it checked. They found that the muffler strap and bracket had been broken (leaving the muffler hanging), and a part of the bumper was damaged. I know this damage was caused by the accident. I had my car in to the dealership for a routine service only two days prior to the accident and there was no damage noted at that time (they for sure would have noticed the muffler thing even if they didn't notice the more cosmetic damage to the bumper).
The person who hit me has Wisconsin Mutual Insurance, and my own insurer (with whom I only carry liability) filed a claim for me for the damage.
Nobody from Wisconsin Mutual called me or talked to me about the accident. Nobody from Wisconsin Mutual even bothered to look at the car(s).
I got a brief and annoying letter from Wisconsin mutual saying:
"Unfortunately, as the damage to your vehicle was prior damage we are unable to assist you further in this matter."
That sucks. I know this damage was not from prior to the accident. I take really good care of my car. I would have noticed damage. I've never had anyone else rear end me, and I've never backed into anything. The dealer didn't see any damage two days prior to the accident. I had the car in to the body shop for an estimate only a couple days after the accident. It's PRETTY DARNED CLEAR this damage was caused by the rear ending.
My own insurer can't really help me, as I don't carry collision coverage (it's an older car and I'm willing to replace the car or pay for fixes for any damage I'm at fault for, but I kind of feel like I shouldn't have to eat this). I paid to replace the muffler strap and bracket ($100 repair) so I wouldn't risk losing the muffler, and the rest is mostly cosmetic (about $1000), so if I have to, I can live with it. I think the damage if left unfixed devalues my car by about $600 if I were to sell it.
My only option may be to sue the guy who hit me in Small Claims Court, and I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle.
Anyway, Wisconsin Mutual seems to be pretty sucky to deny claims without even looking at the damage. Their customer may end up having to go to court. If I was their customer, I don't think I'd be too happy with that (although I suppose the guy brought it on himself by saying he didn't cause any damage when his bigass pickup truck hit my little car).

| Need Fosters (and Forever Homes) |
[15 Jul 2009|10:18am] |
Dane County Friends of Ferals is in desperate need of Foster Families and Forever Homes.
We have a number of super friendly, well-behaved cats that would truly thrive in a stable, loving environment. We also have cats that are people-tolerant (but not entirely tame) that we would love to place with a family with lots of land for them to roam on. They would be excellent mousers, and keep the population of annoying critters way down.
If fostering a cat is more your speed, we have quite a few fuzzy-butts that need a good temporary home. Some are special needs kitties, some need a little bit of medical care, others are 100% healthy and fiesty (the good kind of fiesty), and all need TLC :) All that is really required is a safe place for them to hang out in your home and your time!
DCFoF will be holding an Adoption Fair at MadCat on the West Side this Saturday from 12-3pm. I encourage folks to come down and meet the staff of DCFoF (I'll be there, though it's my first adoption fair and I don't know how helpful I'll be LoL), and meet the kitties.
Come to The Cult of Cute and play with our evil fuzz-butts! You know you wanna!!
In all seriousness, we are running at capacity and can't take in anymore needy cats until we make some placements! Please consider adopting or fostering, and spread the word! Feel free to contact me with questions or interest, and I'll get you in touch with the appropriate person at DCFoF. All of our cats are vaccinated, dewormed, fixed, and tested for FLV and FIV.
Here's a link to all our available cats: http://www.daneferals.org/animals/list?Species=Cat
ETA: For those who might be interested in adopting or fostering, but can't due to lease or other issues, there is the option to Sponsor a Cat. If you click the link above, it takes you to all of our available cats. Click on the name of a cat, and it takes you to their page. Under their picture, there is a link that says "Sponsor Me". You can donate as much or as little as you want, one time or reoccurring. The funds stay allocated to that specific cat. Just sayin'.... *grin*

[14 Jul 2009|09:20pm] |
Hey Madisonians!
A friend bought two tickets for the 1:35pm showing of Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Sundance theatre and now can't go. They are in the first row behind the foot rest railing, on the left side. $13 for both. Anyone interested?

I'm moving out of my apartment of 3 years, and into my first house (yay!). I have not always been a conscientious housekeeper as concerns my bathrooms...as in, there are stains in my toilets, there is unidentifiable schmutz in my shower, floor tile is looking a bit encrusted, etc.
I need to find a cleaning company that is really excellent at returning apartments to as close to the starting state as possible. Anyone have recommendations?
Though I know there are people on this list that could use the work, I'm looking for a company right now; if I don't find any that can do the work in my timeframe, or that seem like they can handle it, I may post again asking for individuals who could do it. For now, recommendations of companies only, please.
Thanks in advance!

| to drivers of automobiles |
[14 Jul 2009|08:21am] |
To drivers of automobiles, Just because you are big and scary and could run over lots of things, doesn't mean that you should. In order to avoid running over things (people, for example), here are some suggestions/tips:
1. That mini piece of road next to the shoulder, blocked off by a big thick line? That is the bike lane. DON'T DRIVE IN IT.
2. Speaking of which, unless the road is an interstate or other giant highway, cyclists and walkers and runners have every right to be on the road. You should slow down (at least to the speed limit, sorry to bother) and move over (if possible). Sure, if you hit us, you would win. But do you really want that on your conscience for the rest of your life?
3. If a pedestrian is trying to cross the road that you are trying to turn left onto, they have the right of way. That means that you shouldn't cut in front of them, or inch up right onto them to get them to move faster.
4. Even if you are turning right, you should STOP and look BOTH WAYS. Pedestrians can come from your right.
5. And when I say STOP, I mean BEFORE the stop sign. Not after the stop sign, over the cross walk, and halfway into the intersection.
Kindly, Your friendly neighborhood runner who almost became roadkill this morning

Looking for anyone affiliated with some sort of mass media outlet. (magazine, newspaper, radio, television). There's a pretty big feature-length zombie film that's in production and we'd like to utilize some of the local resources. Anyone have any in's or ideas?
